  • Everything in its Place: Understanding Symmetry in Your Custom Home Design

Symmetry as it applies to interior design is another word for balance. Balance is the foundation of appealing interior design, regardless of the style, size or location of the space. There’s a harmony about visual balance that instinctively appeals to humans because of the inherent balance in nature, starting with our own bodies!

Symmetry is a good choice for your home if you prefer a sense of order and calm and want to avoid anything too casual. Symmetrical balance in interior design is seen in many formal interiors. A room design with objects mirrored along a central axis is typical of this type of symmetry. A couch with matching tables and lamps on either end is a simple example of formal symmetry at work. This strategy can convey a pleasing sense of stability and elegance but it requires thoughtful adjustment to keep it from being dull. A compelling symmetrical design will often integrate some aspect of asymmetry to establish visual interest. Asymmetry deliberately disrupts the symmetrical order to bring attention to a specific element in a room, such as a piece of art.
