Some Ideas to Consider …

  • Home Style of the Month: Cape Cod

The quintessential American home, the Cape Cod style communicates what most of us think of when we envision a row of homes in small town U.S.A. with front yards and white picket fences. The style actually came over from England with the first settlers who modified the design of their homeland’s modest thatched cottages to survive harsh New England winters. The steep roof prevented the accumulation of snow and rain, while central chimneys with connected fireplaces kept the interior cozy and warm.

The first Cape Cod homes were built from 1690-1850 and the style enjoyed a new popularity from the 1930’s to the 1960’s as Colonial Revival Capes. Cape Cod architecture feels welcoming and homey, with a no-frills approach that places a high value on function. The classic appeal of Cape Cod architecture endures for those with a nostalgic appreciation of beautiful simplicity in design.
