Some Ideas to Consider …

  • Know What to Expect with Your Remodel

Nothing creates more anxiety than the unexpected. This fact is as true in a home remodel as it is in any other facet of life. Simply knowing what to expect during your home remodel can reduce your stress and aggravation and will likely save you money in the long run. Here are some things to expect:

Some Inconvenience – Dust, noise and limited access are simply facts of life when it comes to a remodel. Be ready for these annoyances and they will not seem so bad. Oftentimes, a better alternative is for you to relocate during your remodel (or at least the most active and disruptive months) in order to keep your sanity.

Fatigue – Even with a contract, there will be many decisions that must be made as a remodel progresses. Keep an even keel, and think carefully before answering any questions from your contractor.  Always keep the big picture in mind when answering questions on minor details, but also realize that the longer you take to respond, the more likely delays are occurring.

The Unexpected – It is the rare remodel that goes completely as planned. Not only should you plan for this fact, but you should budget some money to deal with unexpected issues such as old wiring or plumbing.  Sometimes your vision just can’t be done exactly as you want, or it becomes cost prohibitive.  Try to remain flexible in your thinking, and work with the builder to come up with a creative alternative and resolution.

Delays – By and large, most remodelers finish the bulk of the work on time, but constant client changes can trip this up. Keep in mind as you request changes, that these can significantly delay depending upon material availability and coordination of subcontractors.  And as the industry comes out of the recession, change or no change, you can expect longer lead times on materials and higher subcontractor prices as builders increase production.
