The Federal architectural style is truly American and represents the Federal era of 1780 to 1830 in the United States. This was a time of new beginnings and the birth of a nation. Hallmarks of the Federal style include symmetry, balance, and the lack of adornments.

There are many classic Federal buildings still in use across the country but the style is often associated with the mid-Atlantic and northeast regions. As the country grew and flourished in the first decades after the Revolutionary War, the Federal design style was immensely popular. Federal homes typically feature a symmetrical layout with a central front door and a large central gable. Double hung windows, fanlights, cornices, and balustrades are also common elements of the Federal style. Exteriors in Federal homes often feature brick or clapboard siding. Modern homes hoping to incorporate portions of the architectural style may include a symmetrical layout, flat front elevation, and double hung windows.
