  • Modern Multi-Purpose Mudrooms by Connecticut Custom Home Builder

The modern multi-purpose mud room (or entryway) has evolved from a small room near the back door collecting muddy boots, to a large multi-purpose communication center with computer stations and an electronic charging station – and everything in between.  An excellent Better Homes & Gardens.com article entitled, “8 Tips for Effective Entryway Storage” outlines helpful tips for planning a mud room/entryway/communication center space.

The tips are prefaced with the advice to, “…think about how your family lives, and design a space to fit those needs.” Here are a few suggestions to consider:

    Location. Location. Location.
Typically mud rooms are placed near the garage or off the driveway, but the best place for your family depends on how you live, and the functions you are planning for the multi-purpose space. Utilizing storage and adjacent closets or small rooms, it may be a cluster of small spaces that cover all of the functions you need to accommodate.

    Inventory and then Design.
Inventory all of the functional and storage demands on the space, such as coat and boot storage, pet care, desk areas, service sink, lockers, wall hooks, basket shelves, etc. and design the space to accommodate everything.

    Durability.
Make sure your design includes tough, washable surfaces all around. Consider tile flooring, wainscot on the walls and washable wall coverings. Utilize these strategies as you plan your modern multi-purpose mud room and you will be much more organized and prepared the next time the younger kids (and dog!) come in with muddy feet, or the teenagers find themselves one computer station short.
