2014 was a great year for the custom home industry. Recent data collected by the National Association of Home Builders indicates that 2014 saw a 20 percent growth in custom home construction. It is important to acknowledge that this is a small segment of the overall construction industry because it identifies just projects with homes constructed on an owner’s existing land with either the builder or owner serving in the role of general contractor.

    • The share of homes built on an owner’s land was 24.8 percent in 2014. This statistic remains down from the all-time high market share of 31.5 percent in 2009.
    • The total number of custom homes sold in 2014 was 162,000. This is an increase of 27,000 from 2013’s overall total.
    • There was an increase in both the number of units built and the overall share of custom homes in the new construction market.
