Your role in the design and construction process should include:

    • Choosing the right team. It is vital to choose the right professionals to help with your construction project. Take the time to research and select design and construction professionals that understand your vision and have a history of good work.
    • Being prepared. Before the project begins you need to be prepared. Understand local codes, establish a budget (plus 10%), and think through the plans to make sure they benefit your family.
    • Staying in contact. Remaining in close contact with the team during the construction process keeps you up to speed on progress. Ask questions and request more information when you need clarification.
    • Having a contract.  Every project should have a contract, no matter the size.  Each contract should have a start and end date, as well as a detailed description of the work to be done and the materials to be used.  Make sure all change orders are in writing specifying both the additional cost to the project, as well as any delays to the schedule.
