The idea of remodeling a kitchen may seem quite daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! To help you get started, here are four questions that you should answer before you even contact a remodeler:

How do I like to live? – Your kitchen needs to tailor to your lifestyle.  Determine if you cook and entertain, or if it is used casually for your family.  Also, determine if there other activities for which you may need some extra space including studying and surfing the net.

What do I like to cook?   – This is an important consideration when determining how much pantry space you will need.  If you bake, you may want a marble surface.  If you enjoy using fresh ingredients, consider having plenty of prep area and proper storage for refrigeration.

What is my budget? – When determining your budget, don’t overdo, but don’t under-improve either.  Think about the essentials that you will want.  Granite counters, an island with an extra sink, second dishwasher…list your “must haves.”

How important are aesthetics?  Functionality versus appearance is often the defining characteristic of a kitchen.  If you like a neat-looking kitchen, ensure that you provide plenty of storage space for your equipment.  Also, determine your style.  Do you like a contemporary, traditional or eclectic look?  But, make sure it looks like it was born there and doesn’t visually collide with the rest of your house.
